Proposed extension
Bestwood Quarry
Bestwood II is one of the locations being put forward for future mineral working within Nottinghamshire County Council’s draft Minerals Plan, which has been subject to public consultation and scrutiny. In response, we are bringing forward a plan to extend the quarry, in the belief that a small extension of existing workings is generally more desirable than the creation of new sites where quarrying is not currently undertaken.
Extension Proposal
An extension area to the east of the current workings has been investigated and contains sufficient reserves to maintain existing rates of output for a number of years. The direction of working being considered has been designed to ensure that operations take place with minimum impact on any potentially sensitive receptors.
Our plans for the site will not lead to an increase in annual output or lorry movements. They will simply enable us to work the sandstone reserves within the vicinity of the current quarry area and will ensure the long term viability of the operations, and safeguard the existing jobs at the site. The current plans for extending the quarry and its eventual restoration are shown opposite. As part of the planning process, we will continue to consult with local communities, planning authorities, the Environment Agency, and others, and will seek to answer any questions.
Biodiversity at Bestwood II
Government Planning Policy ensures that developers assess and minimise impacts on biodiversity when they apply for planning permission. It is important that biodiversity is assessed holistically across local ecological networks, including international, national, and local sites.
Our restoration scheme will continue as presently, with low-level nature conservation. The additional void created will be restored by creating a cliff profile similar to that in parts of the existing quarry where natural regeneration has been successful in achieving an important habitat for a variety of wildlife.
Our feedback process
A planning application for the extension will be submitted in early spring and Nottinghamshire County Council will conduct a formal consultation on the plans.
