Sherwood sandstone at Bestwood Quarry

Sherwood Sandstone is a unique rock that is used for its quality, consistency and distinctive colour, primarily in asphalt, mortar sand, concrete sand and as a sports pitch dressing. There has been commercial quarrying in the area for many decades and Sherwood Sandstone originating from various local quarries accounts for around a sixth of Nottinghamshire’s sand production. Sherwood Sandstone can only be extracted through quarrying, and quarries must be located where these minerals naturally occur—formed millions of years ago through natural sedimentary processes.

The sandstone is extracted using a mobile plant and loaded onto dump trucks or conveyors which then transport the “as dug” material to the long-established processing plant. At Bestwood II the sandstone is crushed, sized and graded to produce a range of products that are essential to the construction industry.
