About
Bestwood II Quarry
Bestwood II Quarry is a sandstone quarry located on the A60 near Devil’s Elbow, approximately 2km to the south of the village of Ravenshead and approximately 7km to the south of Mansfield.
The quarry, which has been established for decades, extracts sandstone and plays a key role in supplying sand products for use in building/mortar sand, concrete sand, binder sand (for use in asphalt) and as a sports pitch dressing. These sands feed into construction and infrastructure projects in Nottinghamshire and the East Midlands.
The original Bestwood Quarry was located on the outskirts of Nottingham, where Bestwood Country Park now stands. It worked the same Sherwood Sandstone sequence as the current quarry until the site was exhausted, and production moved to the present-day operation. This former quarry has been transformed into a rich and varied landscape, which is home to a wide range of wildlife and is also visited by walkers, cyclists, and nature enthusiasts.
Bestwood II opened in 1947. The Bestwood name was retained – despite the quarry actually lying south of Ravenshead village – as many of the workers from the original site transferred to the new quarry. The quarry is also referred to locally as the ‘Devil’s Elbow’.
We have always worked hard to build a good relationship with local communities.
