Sherwood sandstone

Sherwood Sandstone is a unique rock that is used for its quality, consistency and distinctive colour, primarily in asphalt, mortar sand, concrete and as a sports pitch dressing. There has been commercial quarrying in the area for many decades and Sherwood Sandstone originating from various local quarries accounts for around a sixth of Nottinghamshire’s sand production.

The sandstone is extracted using a mobile plant and loaded onto dump trucks or conveyors which then transport the “as dug” material to the long-established processing plant. At Bestwood II the sandstone is crushed, sized and graded to produce a range of products that are essential to the construction industry.
